How Does Reiki Work?
Reiki is a simple, natural, and safe healing modality that works by treating the entire person’s mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual systems. The Reiki practitioner channels universal life force energy and applies it to the recipient through hand placements on or above the body, restoring balance, clearing energy blockages, and encouraging the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
The practitioner does not cause the healing, and is not the source of the energy. Instead, the practitioner serves as a channel for the universal life energy (Reiki), like a garden hose serves as a channel for water.
Reiki is not a standalone treatment; it works in conjunction with other interventions and should not be used as a substitute for medical care or crisis intervention.
What is Holy Fire Reiki?
Usui Holy Fire III Reiki is an evolution of classic Usui Reiki, introduced by William Lee Rand, which incorporates higher vibrational energy and allows for a more direct connection between the universal life force energy, the practitioner, and the receiver.
The “Holy” in Holy Fire Reiki signifies wholeness and completeness. Holy Fire Reiki is not affiliated with any one belief system; it focuses on restoring and balancing the energetic system as a whole.
Research
While studies on Reiki are limited in number, existing research indicates that Reiki has significant healing potential, suggesting that further investigation into this powerful modality is warranted. This literature review compares various studies that test the effectiveness of Reiki for anxiety and pain management. It also discusses the measurement of a biomagnetic field emanating from the hands of practitioners, such as that produced by a Reiki therapist, as well as similarities between device-generated electromagnetic fields and human-generated biomagnetic energy for healing purposes.
The Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), a nonprofit science research center, also conducted a selective literature review, Mapping the Field of Subtle Energy Healing, of various types of energy healing, including Reiki.
What to Expect for Your First Appointment
Distance Healing
What Happens in a Session?
I’ll start our session with a short meditation so you can get comfortable and centered, even from wherever you are. Then, you can relax in a comfortable position for 30–60 minutes while I work remotely on energy centers that feel blocked or on areas we’ve discussed.
Distance Reiki is great for releasing past traumas and bringing in positive energy for the future—it works beyond time and space. You might feel warmth, relaxation, or a sense of energy shifting and clearing.
When the session is done, you’ll have a few minutes to slowly ground back in your body. I’ll then hold space to talk through anything that came up and share guidance to support your continued healing.
In-Person
What Should I Expect to Feel? Working Signs?
You’re invited to approach your Reiki experience with an open mind, allowing yourself to notice and honor whatever arises. Everyone’s experience, both physically and mentally, is unique, and there’s no right or wrong way to feel during a session. Some common working signs experienced by those receiving Reiki include changes in temperature, muscle relaxation, tingling, vibration, & visualizations.

Aftercare
How Should I Take Care of Myself?
Please get plenty of sleep, rest, drink extra water, and eat light for 1-2 days after receiving a Reiki treatment. Reiki is a form of self-care, so building upon this healing practice with other types of self-care, such as taking a walk, spending time in nature, listening to music, and practicing breathing exercises, are different ways to enhance and prolong the effects of stress reduction, reconnection, and rebalancing. Journaling about any physical effects of the experience, as well as mental effects such as colors, visualizations, dreams, or shifts in energy levels or mental health symptoms, provides valuable information for future sessions and helps document progress and energetic shifts.
Processing Signs 24-48 Hours Afterward
Detoxification symptoms, also known as healing reactions, may occur within 1-2 days of treatment and include: feeling fatigued, cold or flu-like symptoms, sneezing, coughing, or rumbling in the stomach. Water, rest, and a clean diet, as listed above, are ways to move energy and promote healing following energetic releases and shifts.
